'set t 1 100'
'set z 1 40'
'a=aave(var, etc)'
'set t 1'
'set x 1'
'set y 1'
'd ave(a,t=1,t=100)'
Please, try it.
Hoje it works, because I'm not in my PC right now to test it.

Check 'q dims'. My bet is you'll find that the vertical dimension is not the only dimension that is variable.
In order to plot a vertical profile, the vertical dimension is the only one allowed to vary. You need to fix your x-, y-, and t- dimensions.
