Well, that is probably related to a bug that was fixed in version 2.1.a3, the one related to 'unnecessary re-initialization of font files'. Try it with COLA's build of the latest version and see if that fixes it.

This means it doesn't output the image via gxprint

The 'unable to open file' message means exactly that: it can't find "Vera.ttf". Try using a full path in front of the filename. The Fontconfig error is message is harmless, but it comes from the library not GrADS so I can't suppress it.
