[gradsusr] how to put 2 dimensional lat and lon in xdef and ydef

if spacing is linear:
XDEF 88 LINEAR start increment
otherwise, as you wrote:
XDEF 88 LEVELS x1 x2 x3 ... x88

avoid TABS: use just spaces - grads doesn't like tabs

it should work
