[gradsusr] KML output

Hi Jennifer,

Thanks very much for this. The image looks fine in my display too. Now I'm puzzled...I guess another thing we can try is to display my image on your system. If there are no lines present then it is nothing to do with grads and more to do with my coding on the web. If the lines are present then it implies that grads doesn't like my input file. The file is output from a WRF model, which has been post-processed into grib format just for this purpose, so it's conceivable that the problem resides there. Having said that, we display grads images of the data no problem.

Thanks again

Chris

Hi, Chris -
Here's a sample (over India) of 12-hr accumulated precip from the latest GFS 0.25-degree run: http://wxmaps.org/pix/precip_poly_12Z29JUN2016.kml
This file would be much larger if it were global, so I just picked a juicy subregion.

Here's what it looks like in Google Maps:
I couldn't immediately figure out how to load the URL directly, I had to copy it to my desktop first. This is something I wish Google would do for us - add a layer for the current precip, just like the layer for traffic conditions.

Hi Jennifer,

Hmm, interesting. I don't think I'm doing anything different. Is it possible for you to send me the data for the image below so I can rule out Grads as the cause? The file that I'm using contains over 1000 polygons, so I guess that could be a factor too.

Regards

Chris

Hi, Chris -
The 'set shpopts' command is only relevant for drawing shapefiles in GrADS.
I tried this:

'set lat 34 46'
'set lon -80 -60'
'set gxout kml'
'set kml -poly p.kml'
'set ccols -1 9 4 3 7 2'
'set clevs 6 10 14 18 22'
'd p'

Then I loaded that file p.kml into Google Maps. The vertical lines don't show...

Hi Jennifer,

Thanks very much for your response. What I'm trying to do is overlay some weather forecasting model data onto google maps. Ideally, it needs to be KML or something which can easily be converted. Unfortunately, when I attempted to draw the filled polygons (by adding 'set shpopts 15') it didn't affect the end result and I still had the vertical lines. Is this related to me specifying KML output rather than a shapefile?

Cheers

Chris

Hi, Chris -
Please see http://cola.gmu.edu/grads/gadoc/shapefiles.html#caveat
GrADS doesn't handle drawing polygons with holes, so it doesn't create them that way either. The vertical lines are an artifact of cutting the donuts in pieces in order to eliminate the holes. You have to draw them filled and outlined with the same color - then you cannot see those vertical lines and the shaded contours look normal.

Hi everyone,

I've noticed an additional issue that grads doesn't appear to distinguish between standard enclosed polygons and those with holes in them. If I display the output on either google earth or maps, then those polygons which contain holes have a vertical line from the perimeter of the polygon to each hole. Has anyone encountered this issue before?

Subject: [gradsusr] KML output

Hi all,

I'm having some issues producing KML output (with polygon option; grads version 2.1.a3). I'm trying to specify my own values for the polygons, but unfortunately the output is always for different values to the one that I specify. For example:

'define east=ugrdl125'
'define north=vgrdl125'
'set clevs 0.5 1.5 2.5 3.5 4.5 5.5 6.5 7.5 8.5 9.5 10.5 11.5 12.5 13.5 14.5 15.5 16.5 17.5 18.5 19.5 20.5 21.5'
'set gxout kml'
'set kml -poly euro4_10m_wind'
'd mag(east,north)'

Gives some sample output as....

<styleUrl>#14</styleUrl>
<name>1.5 to 3.5</name>
<Polygon>
<altitudeMode>clampToGround</AltitudeMode>
<tessellate>1</tessellate>
<outerBoundaryIs>
<LinearRing>
<coordinates>
......
</coordinates>

Is there a different way to specify the contours for KML output that I'm not aware of?

Regards

Chris
