Hi Gopika,
Check out the example using the GrADS functions 'const' and 'maskout' for
calculating the area of the globe above a precip threshold:
http://www.iges.org/grads/gadoc/gradfuncconst.html
You should be able to do a very similar calculation for the area of SST
above a certain threshold.
