[gradsusr] Combining GRIB1 files

I have what *should* be a relatively straightforward problem that is not
turning out well.

I have two GRIB1 ECMWF files that I want to combine into one file so the
data is easier to work with.

The files apparently have slightly different format and/or domains. When I
combine them using 'cat file1 file2 > out' some of the variables are no
longer readable. IE variables originally from file1 may be readable, but
the variables originally from file2 may not be.

Any ideas on what I need to do to the GRIBs so all variables can be read as
one file? I'm using grib2ctl and gribmap but not opposed to other tools if
necessary.
