[gradsusr] monthly mean

Dear Grads users,
I want to calculate monthly averages (Dec Jan Feb) from daily data covering 
the period of 1951 to 2007. i want to use this data for time series. Is thereany clever way of using the ave()- function that would account for the 
varying lengths of the month (including the handling of leap years)?
