Fred, After using sdfopen on a single MERRA data file, used "q ctlinfo".
That will return about 90% of what you need to write a typical grads ctl
file. Use the documentation below to edit that info to create a template
that spans all your data files on your system.  The ctl file you create
should work on all the data files bu using the "open" command.  Just pay
attention to the templating  and TDEF in the ctlinfo editing.
