[gradsusr] Help with any "Hail Script"

Hi Guisseppe,

it is a interesting question.

You can start taking a look at some GFS variables that are already associated with hail.
For example, you can display a field of CICEPsfc (surface categorical ice pellets [yes=1;0=no]) as a first approach.

I haven't checked if GFS 0.5 has other variables directly asscoiated with hail, but another way is to calculate the high in which Tw goes to 0. Ideally, hail formation is expected when Tw=0 ºC occurs between 2000 and 3500 m. Take a look at Fawbush and Miller (1953): A method for forecasting haisltone size at the Earth surface. Bull. Amer. Meteoro. Soc., 34, 235-244.

Hope this helps,
Ricardo
