[gradsusr] help in opening file

You need a complete descriptor file (dtype netcdf) with a PDEF entry. Please have a look at the doc page in your error message as well as 
http://iges.org/grads/gadoc/descriptorfile.html and http://iges.org/grads/gadoc/pdef.html .
