[gradsusr] Grads cannot open MERRA HDF file

Dear Jennifer,

Thank you so much for the help.
1. I am trying to get HDF4.2r3, but look likes I cannot ftp the file, Here is what I did:
***********
ftp iges.org
***********
Connected to iges.org.
500 OOPS: cannot change directory:/web/colaftp
ftp>

Also, when I click" local copy of source code<ftp://grads.iges.org/grads/Supplibs/2.1/src/HDF4.2r3.tar.gz>", it asks the name and passcode, I put "anynomous", it won't work.

2. The Grads on my pc come with Ubuntu, so I guess it is not easy to change the default software. Do you know any version of Grads which can read hdf4, that way I can install it on my pc.

Thanks again.

Yalei

Your build is not enabled to handle hdf4 files, only hdf5. Please have a look at http://iges.org/grads/gadoc/supplibs.html for help on building HDF4.2r3.

I downloaded the file and was able to open it with sdfopen without any problems. Based on these clues:

Open Error: Data file type invalid
--> The invalid description file record is:
 --> DTYPE hdfsds

Attempt to use feature that was not turned on when netCDF was built.

I believe the problem lies in your particular GrADS build, especially the hdf library. Can you send the output from 'q config'?
