The issue here is not COLA vs OpenGrADS releases of GrADS, but the fact
that UDFs from grads v1.9 no longer works with GrADS v2.0. OpenGrADS has a
mechanism for adding UDFs but no one has ported Matt's EOF package to open
grads.  If you are willing to use pygrads, there is functionality there to
compute EOFs, see
