[gradsusr] Question regarding basemap.gs

Hi all,
I am generating standard wave height charts in various parts of the world using grads and I recently ran into an issue that confused me using basemap.gs in one of my scripts.
I want the best land representation possible, so I used the high res option with basemap (e.g. basemap L 0 1 H). I've compared the land using the high res option with the land using the medium res option.
In areas surrounding the US, the land using the high res option looks much better. However, this does not appear to be the case in other places I've checked around the world (e.g. Portugal, Indonesia, South Africa). As an example, I've attached 2 images for Portugal. In the first image (basemap_mres) I've used the medium res option with basemap. In the second image (basemap_hires), I've used the high res option. As you can see, the land is significantly degraded using the high res option.
As a sanity check, I re-downloaded the high res lpoly and opoly files, but I get the same thing.
As always, any help on this matter is greatly appreciated.
Best Regards,
Sam
