Hi Jeff,
try writing with fwrite. It was working for me; example of my script is
here:
open
/home/p1/climate_data/Reanalyses/ERA_Interim/daily/ERA.INTERIM.PRS.GP1.dail
y.ctl
set fwrite filename.txt
set gxout fwrite
set x 1 240
set y 1 121
set lev 600
define nu90 = ave(uprs, t=1july1990, t=31july1990)
d nu90
disable fwrite
close 1
quit
