[gradsusr] How to fill background map

Dear Jeff,
I saw the website but unfortunately I got confused about how I can do that. In fact I have seen some images like the one which is attached to the email. In this map we can see lands in green color (with grads).
You mean that it is impossible to do so? If yes, could you please lead me more and explain in details to colorize the map?
