These are Level 2 (ungridded, swath) MODIS data. Although the developers
have discussed supporting this type of data, currently GrADS does not
support swath data. At this point GrADS is not your tool for this type of
analysis.

Level 3 data (gridded), although requiring a data descriptor file, are more
easily handled by GrADS.
