Just reporting back to the brain-trust in case someone else in the
future reports the same problem. At least this will be in the archives.
Full points to Arlindo on this one.
One the newer Debian (etch) system, upgraded the libc and grads then
worked. So - old libc version was the culprit.
As part of the upgrade system - the installation said that gdm (login
manager) would have to be restarted. So, after testing grads ..
rebooted (just to be sure) and ... oopps .. X wouldn't start as the
graphic card module was now broken.
Re-installed the old libc and got X back .. and lost grads.
Given the RedHat system is ancient, I'm not even willing to even try to
change libc on that.
Good thing the Debian system doesn't have too much going on it - so a
full rebuild to a new version of Debian is now on the order sheet... and
the RedHat version is frozen at 2.0.5 until the machine is retired.....

hmmmm 2.3.4 on both computers. Thanks Arlindo -- I'll give that a shot.
('though I hate to think of the depencies-worm-can I'll be opening
up.....)

Ron,
Sometimes this floating point error means an incompatible version of
libc. What is the result of
% ldd --version
You should have at least GNU libc 2.5; anything earlier will not work.
