[gradsusr] SDF file does not have any non-coordinate variables

Weird! The differences between the ncdumps may be more relevant that  
you think, if you can read one file but not the other. Try skipping  
xdfopen and go ahead and write a full-blown descriptor for 'open'. If  
that doesn't work, then I'll need a copy of the file to play with it  
myself.
