hi Dennis,

this is a 'preprojected' grid, see:

http://grads.iges.org/grads/gadoc/pdef.html

where the x/y/def lines define the output or target grid the input or
preprojected grid is interpolated (bilinear) to.  the pdef line
defines the input/source grid.
