[gradsusr] shapefiles questions

Yes, you can use shapefiles to draw the coastal outlines and political  
boundaries instead of the GrADS default map. Use 'set mpdraw off' and  
'draw shp'. Please see the documentation on shapefiles to learn how to  
control the drawing of shapefiles. http://grads.iges.org/grads/gadoc/shapefiles.html
