fwrite

If I save a file using fwrite, what do I use to open that file again.  In the docs it states that fwrite outputs a 'grid file'.  Do I then use the 'open' command to open that file?  If so, are there any restrictions or parameters required in that commaned line?  If not, what am I not understanding?
