Climatology - January start?

Dear users,

When calculating climatologies using the following syntax

'set t 1 12'
'define clim = ave(my_var, t+0, t=last, 12)' ,

does it matter if my data-set do not start in Jan because my first time step
is in fact Oct 1960?  Or does it have to start in Jan?
