The normal load of the machine is 3 when GrADS is not running and 4 when the rendering runs. According to my statistics, the CPU load never goes over 30-something percent when GrADS is running. That makes me suppose that GrADS does not support multithreading. Stats: http://www.saakeskus.fi/images/kload.png http://www.saakeskus.fi/images/kcpustat.png As chart-rendering is a very CPU-intensive thing, I think, multithreading would be a very practical thing as most modern machines have multicore CPUs... Especially if you are rendering roughly 3500 charts every 6 hours :). Terve, Stefan -- Last words of a stormchaser: "Where is that rotation on the radar?!" Message-ID: I am printing a station plot with station id's that are either 4 characters or 5 numeric. The plot is only printing the first four digits of the station ids which are 5 numeric. The data file has the station id left justified so I don't think it's truncating the station id because of positioning in the file. Documentation all says that an id of up to 7 is supported. Is there some default or setting somewhere that controls how many characters are used for a station id? The GrADS downloads web page (http://iges.org/grads/downloads.html) has been updated with links to the source code and a few pre-compiled binaries. This release has some nice new features: * New interface for the HDF5 data format http://iges.org/grads/gadoc/SDFdescriptorfile.html * New options for templating on Julian Day and Time axis indices http://iges.org/grads/gadoc/templates.html * New "offt" syntax for variable specification to express time as an offset from the variable's initial time instead of an absolute value http://iges.org/grads/gadoc/variable.html http://iges.org/grads/gadoc/offt.html * New function eloop() for obtaining E-varying results from expressions that are unable to operate when E is a varying dimension http://iges.org/grads/gadoc/gradfunceloop.html * New option for contour labels: 'set clab masked' This creates gaps in the contour lines for the labels, so rectangles for the label background are not drawn; contour labels never overlap. http://iges.org/grads/gadoc/gradcomdsetclab.html Other enhancements in this build that may be of interest: * Fixed sdfopen/xdfopen to detect only those data variables whose dimensions match all of the grid dimensions * Added isnan() and isinf() tests at initial I/O Enjoy! -- Jennifer M. Improvements include: * Replacement of old CAPE/CIN function to a version more precise and with more options, from converting George Bryan (NCAR)'s Fortran90 version to GrADS scripting. (Thank you George). * Finally utilizing the math_* intrinsic functions to speed up performance. * Fixing a few bugs related to interacting options. * Adding color to a few additional features to improve visibility. Given the improvement and accuracy in the CAPE/CIN calculations of this version, I strongly recommend anyone who uses plotskew.gs (which I believe is in the hundreds by now) to grab the latest version at: http://moe.met.fsu.edu/~rhart/software/skew.html Please do check back at this URL occasionally for additional small bug fixes and improvements as they may occur. Something like: ... xdef linear 1 1 ydef linear 1 1 Then when you've got the file open, do a 'q ctlinfo' and copy all the information about the file and paste that into a text file. Now you've got just about everything you need for a descriptor; just add your pdef and the new XDEF and YDEF you're going to interpolate to. --Jennifer On Aug 12, 2009, at 5:18 AM, Dot Deb wrote: > I have a (CF-1.4 compliant) NetCDF dataset in "rotated pole" > coordinate system. > I'd like to use the PDEF option ROTLL. > I tried to do it writing a minimal "descriptor file" for "xdfopen": > > DSET ^bolchem-saprc90soa-out-20030801.nc > PDEF 25 24 ROTLL 48.0 -167.2 0.4 0.4 -4.8 -5.0 > > The problem is that xdfopen does not use (and does not recognise) the > PDEF entry. > I couldn't find any other way than writing a complede "descriptor > file". > This is a bit annoying because the only thing I have to change for the > representation of my dataset is only the coordinate system: > I do not want to rewrite all the information already included in my > NetCDF! > > Is there anything that escapes me? > If not, is there any plan to modify this behavior in short time? > > Alberto -- Jennifer M. In-Reply-To: <79aecae70908111340j107eac34qc9b3dcd8b9340e62@mail.gmail.com> Message-ID: There are no specific controls for the arrows in the streamlines. I'll put it on my list of requested features. The line thickness ranges from 1 to 12. For postscript output, the values 1-12 are distinct for lines of gradually increasing thickness. For image output, thickness values 1-5 all look the same (thin), same with thickness values 6-11 (thick); thickness value 12 is the thickest. A trick for making contours stand out a bit more in a plot is to draw white (or black) thick contours, then overlay thin colored contours. This gives the colored contours a little background to highlight them against a map or shaded contour plot. In version 2.0.a6, there was a little bug introduced that led to the display window not showing the thickness properly, even though the image output from printim looked right. That was fixed in 2.0.a7.1. --Jennifer On Aug 11, 2009, at 4:40 PM, Mike Bosilovich wrote: > OK, spoke too soon, set cthick does affect the thickness of the lines. > Didn't notice the difference till set cthick 10 and greater. > > Mike > > On Thu, Jul 30, 2009 at 3:52 AM, zhao yacang wrote: >> HI, Ladies and Gentle man: >> >> I am using 'set gxout stream' to draw streamline figure. Some hdf4 files have enough attribute metadata so that they can be opened with sdfopen or xdfopen, but that is not the norm. The only way to get GrADS to read an hdf5 file is to provide a complete descriptor with all the required metadata -- there is no support in sdfopen/xdfopen for the hdf5 format. Date: Wed, 12 Aug 2009 20:45:39 -0500 Subject: g2ctl doesnt set the proper undefined value Message-ID: Hi, Im having an issue with g2ctl & how it sets the undefined value in the ctl file output. g2ctl.pl hard-sets the undef value at 9.99e+20, which I *believe* has been pretty much the standard undef value up until now. However, the undef value on some datasets (the GFS grib2 files, for example) is giving me a value of -9.99e+08. (could someone please confirm this value for undef from the GFS grib2 files?). Normally, I don't believe that it matters if the g2ctl.pl undef value differs from the grib2's undef value. However, I ran into an issue with pygrads; pygrads reads the undef value from the ctl file, and it will improperly try to plot undefined data points due to fact that it doesn't know the correct undef value. So, my question/suggestion is: should g2ctl be setting the undef value based on the dataset inside the grib2 file, instead of hard-setting to a fixed value? Is it even possible to retrieve this value from the grib2 metadata? The undef value in the data file (let's call it the 'input undef') is no longer the same as the undef value in the display or in the output (the 'output undef'). If you want them to be the same, use the 'set undef' command. Here is the documentation on 'set undef': set undef This command allows the user to set the undefined data value for all forms of GrADS output. This command controls the undefined values printed to screen with the 'gxout stat' and the 'gxout print' output, as well as the undefined values in fwrite, sdfwrite, and geotiff files. The output undef value will not necessarily be the same as the native undef value of the data set -- the default value is -9.99e8. The user can easily change the output undef value to match the undef value of the default file or a specific open file. Syntax set undef value (sets output undef value to value) set undef file n (copies undef value from file n) set undef dfile (copies undef value from default file) Usage Notes This is a new feature with GraDS version 2.0.a6, that changes the default behavior of GrADS! By default, the output undef value will be -9.99e8 instead of the undef value given in the data descriptor file. You may easily revert to the old behavior by using the 'set undef file n' option. You can find out what the current output undef value is with the 'query undef' command. The reinit command will return the output undef value to the default (-9.99e8); the reset command leaves it unchanged. If you issue the 'set undef dfile' command, the output undef value will be copied from the default file's undef value. If you subsequently change the default file number, the output undef value will not change. You must issue 'set undef dfile' again if you wish the output undef value to be the same as the new default file. As for your specific question about grib, there is no undef value in grib, there's a bit map. The undef record in a 'dtype grib/grib2' descriptor file is a number to put where data are designated as missing by the bit map -- it can be anything you want: -9.99e33, 1e +20, -999, 9.99e20, etc. There is no standard. In the recent versions of GrADS, this value has become almost entirely irrelevant, since the only way it will appear in your output is if you use the command "set undef file n". I cannot address issues with pygrads -- but I suspect that if you use the "set undef file n" command before you 'display', your problems might go away. It might also be relevant to know that the 'q ctlinfo' output will show you the undef value in the descriptor file (** see note below), but the output from 'gxout stat' or 'set stat on' shows you the undef value in the output. For pygrads, the better way to check the undef value might be to 'q undef' or 'set stat on' and parse that output instead. --Jennifer ** N.B.: In a self-describing file (netcdf or hdf) the undef entry in the descriptor file can have 2nd argument, the name of the attribute that contains the missing value. In this case, the value given in the 1st argument of the undef entry is not required to match the undef values in the file, it can be anything you want, just like grib undefs. For recent versions of GrADS, this undef value is also almost entirely irrelevant, just as I mentioned above. At the moment of an I/ O request, the named attribute containing the undef value is read from the variable's attributes, the retrieved undef value is used to test for misising data, and then discarded. The undef value in the descriptor file is not used unless you use the "set undef file n" command. An example is like: Say I have bunch of forecast files ordered by forecast hour (it is actually output from the ECPC regional model): r_pgb.f** which ** is forecast hour like 00 06 12 etc, and the file is a grib file grib2ctl.pl r_pgb.ft00 > control.ctl Change your control.ctl to like this to reflect you have a group of grib files: dset ^ r_pgb.f%f2 options template |index ^sample.idx| .... In-Reply-To: <435254.75022.qm@web31005.mail.mud.yahoo.com> Message-ID: Good evening everybody I have a simple question (for you ;) ). Today i get my first real experiences with GrADS. I have to produce some MSG-Satellite-Images for our University. First of all i tried it with MATLAB but the problem ist, that i cannot reproduce the mproj nps in a 100% justness with MATLAB (and Matlab is a realy relay bad software for visualisations in my opinion). After 15 minutes i had a wonderfull picture with a 100% justness image, createt with GrADS. But here comes my question. Is there any possibility to plot something like a truecolor-"pixel image" with GrADS? My idea is to import a x:x:3-Matrix with RGB-Color- values into GrADS (Grib-File) and then there should be a possibility to plot this RGB-lookalike-plot. Does someone has some experiences here? From reading the manual I though that using 'q pos nowait' instead of 'q pos' would do the trick but it ends up behaving exactly the same as 'q pos'. Any clues as to how to get this functionality into a display ? The X windows system does continuously monitor mouse events and so always knows where the mouse is. GrADS makes the mouse location info available through q pos with a click of the mouse but the system would also always know where the mouse was located (eg IDL, McIDAS to name two graphics display systems that continuously monitor the mouse and report location and field values under the mouse). I was hoping the 'q pos nowait' was the GrADS answer to this. I've set up a system using xev to continuously report back the mouse location in the GrADS graphics window and am in the process of coding up the GrADS mapping transformations to convert the mouse relative positions to lat-lon values. An internal GrADS function to do this would be a far neater solution though. It includes support for arrowhead size and changes strmden behavior to be less dependent on data density and geographic location. Its main purpose is to fix the erroneous streamlines. In current GrADS they are generally wrong, especially near the poles, because they assume square grid boxes everywhere. With the patch, streamlines become usable with the nps and sps projections. The patch includes performance optimizations, but may actually run slower because of higher precision and a more sophisticated algorithm. The patch is based on 2.0.a2. I planned to do more code clean-up, tests and maybe more enhancements (good default density for all map projections and all locations, nicer positions for arrow heads, ...), but didn't find time to actually do it. I ran the patched a2 for a year without problems (but I generate similar maps most time). The attached version of the patch is adapted to 2.0.a7.1, but I don't even know if it compiles, because the GrADS build system isn't easy and I got errors at bootstrap that weren't resolvable for now. Question 1: I am using vpage to put several plots on one page (2 rows, 2 columns). I used xlopts and ylopts to increase the size of the labels for the x and y axes. Which command do I need to use to increase the size of the string I write using "draw xlab" and "draw ylab" (It seems to me that the size of those strings increase with xlopts and ylopts when I only plot one figure on one page, but does not when I plot multiple figures per page?) Question 2: How do I plot a title that is not centered in the middle of the plot? Does draw title has additional options that I do not know. Question 3: Finally, how do I plot one color bar at the bottom of the figure. Since the 4 plots uses the same min and max, I only need to plot one common color bar. I tried to first set vpage to off, but I can't seem plot the color bar using cbarn.gs. Thanks. To increase the size of the string you can use the 'set strsiz' command on each panel. This can be tricky because only on the output file you can check the actual size of your string. Minor changes won't make a big difference on the screen figure. 2. You can always set the title just as another string, to do that use 'draw string' command as usual, but first i recommend set the vpage off so you can locate your title string anywhere you want. 3. Try using 'set parea' after to 'set vpage off'. Check the cbarn.gs script for a horizontal colorbar option. X , Y varying (horizontal X, Y plot) Z = 1 T varying (360 days) Each pixel displays a colour coded value for precipitation. I'm trying to sort precipitation from least to most, for each pixel, through the time series. This is because I want to display an image of the 90th percentile, to work out a vague probability of extreme weather at each pixel. How would I go about sorting in GrADS? I have a patch for gxstrm.c (almost a complete rewrite). To save space, centers are allowed to pre-define bitmaps and only include the number of the bitmap in the grib file. Of course, the center will have to make the pre-defined bitmap available by some other means. Predefined bitmaps can make the grib file harder to read because some (many?) grib libraries don't support pre-defined bitmaps. (I've never seen a file with a pre-defined bitmap.) One way to save space is to use submessages. One copy of the bitmap can be used for many fields. Someone else may know of a way to format the "gxout grid" plots (besides digsiz and dignum), but this one relies on the 'q defval...' query and a grid x-y WHILE loop to format and plot the values at each grid point. While it may take an eye-blink longer, it seems to work. As before, I included the GrADS-default and script-derived images (airt1... and airt2..., respectively). I did not include wind barbs in sample, since you did not have a question about them.
