I use PRATE. GFS gives the precipitation types for PRATE:

CRAIN = categorical rain(1=yes, 0=no)
CSNOW = categorical snow (1=yes, 0=no)
CICEP = categorical ice pellets(1=yes, 0=no)
CFRZR = categorical freezing rain (1=yes, 0=no)

so for snow, I basically do

d CSNOW*PRATE
