opening HDF files in GrADS

Dear GrADS users,
I have reviewed the recent archives in my attempt to better understand how to display HDF files in GrADS. I downloaded an NDVI HDF file from terra-MODIS and want to display it in GrADS.
I tried to open the file with sdfopen while in GrADS HDF, but I continue to receive the error message: NO DISCERNABLE X COORDINATE.
Any ideas on where to go from here from others who have successfully opened other HDF files?
