wgrib2 v1.7.1 compilation error

Hello,
on the x86_64 Debian Linux machine machine that I previously compild wgrib2
v1.6.1 on I now tried to compile wgrib2 v1.7.1. Here is what I did:

$ wget ftp://ftp.cpc.ncep.noaa.gov/wd51we/wgrib2/wgrib2.tgz.v1.7.1
$ tar xvfz wgrib2.tgz.v1.7.1
$ cd grib2
$ make
[..]
/bin/sh: gmake: command not found
make: *** [jasper-1.900.1/src/libjasper/.libs/libjasper.a] Error 127

Don't know why gmake could not be found. I don't have gmake but I have make
and the compilation of wgrib2 v1.6.1 worked fine so what is the problem?
