Template option for files with Julian Day names

I agree a %j3 option would be great.
I had a similar issue as yours once and used a script from an open forum
(attached) that has worked okay to convert to Gregorian calendar. But
in that case I needed the mmdd info to create a new grib record and
needed naming convention changed., and no longer needed the julian in
the file name.
