Hi,

I don't have an idea, but 4 GB sounds too large. You could try to
separate the
data in several smaller files with the tools from NCO (netcdf
operators?).
If needed, you can try to write an additional control-file (.ctl) with
the
option template in order to combine the files in GrADS.

Sorry but I have no better idea.
