lists and fields in scripting

Hi,
I just found myself documenting a grads script, saying:

* This is spaghetti code mainly because of the use of indexed scalar
variables.
* Lists, vectors and fields cannot be handled in grads yet.

But is it true?

I use variables like this:

ab.i.j where i and j are used as if they were indexes of
a 2D field.

Does grads scripting language offer something more appropriate?
i.e. ab(i,j) = 13.32 ?

Thanks,
Bernd.
