Time diagram along a given cross-section (Hovmoller-like diagram)

Folks,

Is there any elegant way to get (or at least display) the time
variation along a given spatial cross-section?

For an example,
Data are on a regular x,y,t grid
I'd like to display time variation along straight line connecting x1,y1
and x2,y2.
