Grads on Slackware 11

Hi all
I'm trying to install grads (dods enabled) on my Slackware linux 11
box, over the last few releases of slackware the installation of grads
has become more tricky with my last installation using a precompiled
"fedora core" version kindly provided by another user. Now with
slackware 11 even this does not work with grads going out with a
segmentation error immediately after sdfopen is invoked.
I have now tried to compile from source, however I have the
following missing libraries after the ./configure:

checking for libreadline.a in supplibs... no
checking freq.h usability... no
checking for libz.a in supplibs... no
checking udunits.h usability... no

My question is is it likely that I will have success in compiling
grads if I trawl the net and find these libraries and install them, or
can someone point me in the right direction to solve this problem.

Many thanks
    Jean Pierre

PS and yes I have though of creating a virtual machine running Red Hat
to process my dods applications ......
