problem opening netcdf file

I have a problem opening a netcdf file in grads - I have tried both sdfopen and xdfopen.

My Version of Grads

Description of Problem
----------------------

When I try to open my netcdf file I get the error message:

with sdfopen:
ga-> sdfopen arch.10yr.base.nc
Scanning self-describing file:  arch.10yr.base.nc
SDF file has no discernable X coordinate.

or, with xdfopen:
ga-> xdfopen arch.10yr.base.nc
Scanning Descriptor File:  arch.10yr.base.nc
XDFOpen Error:  Unknown keyword in description file

  The data file was not opened.
