1 and 3) Grads works perfectly well with ERA40 files provided
you use grib2ctl and gribmap to generate control files
and indexes.
A very useful feature is to use a template control file
to make temporal sections spanning a large number of GRIB files.
I have done this with about 1Tb of ERA-40 files. The limitation
is only how much disk you can fit on your laptop.
