Smoothing fgvals

Hi all,
Simple Question:  Is there a way to 'smooth' the output of fgvals?

I've tried a couple of options like the following without success:

'open file.ctl'
'set csmooth on'
'set gxout fgrid'
'set fgvals 1 95'
'd const(var1, 0, -u)'
or
'd smth9(var1)'

But in all cases the grib boxes are fully shaded and square.  I need to
use fgals rather than a 'gxout shaded' option because I'm overlaying this
data over a 'shaded' output.
