to clean the interpolation of neighboring areas

yes you need to do maskout command. I have never used
station data. But as i know grads, it doesnot
interpolate anything. probably it has been already
done before ploting in grads.

you required to do in case is that generate a mask(-1
& 1) file  using topography data for your grid. assign
maskvale -1 to those location where you donot want to
plot the data otherwise 1.

write ctl file for the same (i assume you know it)

first open station file
second open mask file

use command d maskout(stndata,mask)

this should work.
