You're right I do have .dodsrc though I don't know where it came from.
Here it is:
# DODS client configuation file. See the DODS
# users guide for information.
USE_CACHE=1
MAX_CACHE_SIZE=20
MAX_CACHED_OBJ=5
IGNORE_EXPIRES=0
CACHE_ROOT=/home/mulgor/.dods_cache/
DEFAULT_EXPIRES=86400
ALWAYS_VALIDATE=0
# PROXY_SERVER=<protocol>,<host url>
# PROXY_FOR=<regex>,<proxy host url>,<flags>
# NO_PROXY_FOR=<protocol>,<host>
But I don't have a proxy server.
I'm connecting directly to the Internet (as far as I know).
I've looked at the DODS users guide, but found nothing about proxy or no_proxy.

I think it is either a problem with proxy server ie where you have a file called .dodsrc in your home directory which looks somthing like:
# DODS client configuation file. See the DODS
# users guide for information.
USE_CACHE=1
MAX_CACHE_SIZE=5
MAX_CACHED_OBJ=1
IGNORE_EXPIRES=0
CACHE_ROOT=/home/arabonis/.dods_cache/
DEFAULT_EXPIRES=86400
ALWAYS_VALIDATE=0
# PROXY_SERVER=<protocol>,<host url>
# PROXY_FOR=<regex>,<proxy host url>,<flags>
# NO_PROXY_FOR=<protocol>,<host>
PROXY_SERVER=http,http://cache.uct.ac.za:8080
PROXY_FOR=http://cola8.iges.org:9090/dods/.*
PROXY_FOR=http://www.monsoondata.org:9090/dods/gfs/.*
Otherwise you need to use the statically linked version of the source if you want to compile it yourself.
Cheers

Hi JP
Yes, I can ping monsoondata.org OK.
It appears to me that I'm getting into GrADS DODS.
A session opens for me in console and I can move around inside and execute various commands, except that sdfopen doesn't work, as indicated.
But one thing that is different from DOS is that in Linux the session opens in the console, whereas in DOS a special new window opens. Actually, that's the reason I'm porting to Linux because if a server is not available or any error occurs, that window hangs horribly and stuffs up Win XP.
Does gradsdods need anything else other that access to data?
Does it need a netCDF library or something? It has access only to gradsdods at present.
BTW, I'm using grads-1.8sl11

This seems more to be a network problem, see if you can ping the monsoondata server from the box, if not then thats the area to look in, otherwise if you are behind a proxy server you may need a .dodsrc config script to point grads to go via the proxy server.
Cheers

I'm moving from Win XP to Linux with my GrADS DODS routines.
I'm a newbie in Linux, but I've managed to install gradsdods OK and once I set GIDDIR using export, it seems to open OK. However, when I try to open a file, this is what I get:
sdfopen http://nomad3.ncep.noaa.gov:9090/dods/gfs/rotating/gfs_12z
Scanning self-describing file: http://nomad3.ncep.noaa.gov:9090/dods/gfs/rotating/gfs_12z
nc_open failure:
Invalid argument
does not exist or is not a netCDF file.s/rotating/gfs_12z
Couldn't ingest SDF metadata.
If this was an HDF-SDS file, try gradshdf.
Yet this same command works OK in Win XP.
Can anyone suggest where I'm going wrong?
