Hello Charles,
you can open both the files at the same time if the resolution of the both files is same.
then u can plot vector as.
d var1.1,var2.2 (var1 is variable for first file and var2 is variable of second file)
you can plot contour plot simply
d var1.1
d var2.2

How can I do this? I really have 2 questions therefore: i) how can I have both files open at the same time such that both can be displayed at once; and ii) how can I use both vector and contour gxout options?

The only reason I am downloading the NetCDF file and doing it myself is because I want to fiddle about with colours and intervals.
