Ashok,

> can we measure the total area (in square km) wherever

Using gridded data the contours only ever give you smoothed results. So I
would just do a 'set gxout grid', 'set digsiz 0.2' (or whatever value to make
it readable), count the number of grid cells fulfilling your criteria and
convert it to an area using your grid resolution.
