time axis control

Assuming I have climatological SST (from January to December), I want to
plot a time series.

I set "tdef 9999 Linear jan0000 1mon" in the .ctl file, the axis plotted
is "JAN0 FEB0 ... DEC0". What I realy want is "Jan Feb ... Dec".

If I set "tdef 12 Linear jan1999 1mon" in the .ctl file, the axis plotted
is "JAN1999 FEB1999 ... DEC1999".

How can I control the appearence of time axis, particularly get rid of
the "year".
