Sdf time units

I've created a netcdf file with time units attribute defined as

time:units  = 'days since 1980-11-1 00:00:00 '

But sdfopen yields the result

SDF: Time unit has too small an increment for use with GrADS (min,
1minute).

According to all of the documentation I have seen, it should have
worked. Any ideas?

I'm using grads 1.8 on a redhat 7.3 system.
