Hi, Steve --
I added a mod to the 'dtype hdfsds' interface so it can handle byte 
data (in HDF parlance, the data types are DFNT_INT8 or DFNT_UINT8) for 
the next (1.9b4) release of GrADS. I don't know exactly when that 
release will be ready...
