Andrea,
Try this 'dtype hdfsds' descriptor file with the 'open' command:

DSET ^CER_ES4_Aqua-FM3_Edition2_024024.200207
DTYPE hdfsds
TITLE This is only a test
UNDEF 3.4028235e+38 _FillValue
XDEF 144 LINEAR -180.0 2.5
YDEF  72 LINEAR  -90.0 2.5
ZDEF 1 LEVELS 1000
TDEF 1 LINEAR 0Z01JUL2002 1dy
VARS 5
Solar_incidence=>solin     0 y,x Incident Radiation
Net_radiant_flux=>netflux 0 y,x Net radiation
Longwave_flux=>lwflux     0 y,x Longwave flux
Shortwave_flux=>swflux    0 y,x Shortwave flux
Albedo=>albedo                  0 y,x Albedo
ENDVARS

In the dump file you sent in your original email, there was a second
listing for the variable "Shortwave flux" that also varied in a time
dimension -- can't imagine how you got an HDF file with two variables
of the same name with different shapes, but ... if you want that
instead change the tdef size to 31 instead of 1 and change y,x in that
variable's units declaration to "t,y,x" instead of "y,x" .
