if statement

Hi everyone
    I'm having a problem evaluating several conditions in an if
statement, basically I want to run a section of script for several
different options, ie

if ( _va = ssh | _va = sstssh | _va = sstsshcur | _va = sstsshcur )
.......
endif

If I have _va = ssh or any of the others it does not recognize it and
run the contents.

I have used the same syntax for and (&) evaluations and it has worked,
anyone have an idea as to where I am going wrong  with this one.
