Indeed, this did work, I don't know what I did wrong initially.

I downloaded the 24hr mesoeta prog from the ncep server.  Since the
dataset is only valid for the +24hr time period, is the verification
time the same as the
initial time?  I assume it is, since following both examples provided
the same results.
